Why Trick Williams Is Headed For WWE Stardom

We are officially on the road to WrestleMania in the world of WWE. On the heels an eventful Royal Rumble this past weekend, you probably noticed a new superstar on the scene. He is Trick Williams, and with some time, he has the potential to become a household name. From my vantage point, he has all the tools, and don’t you worry, I’ll let you in on what all of those are.

Familiar beginnings

Born Matrick Belton, Williams was a collegiate football standout who played wide receiver. He even attended Hampton University, an HBCU. Like many who have come before him, the game of football served as a catalyst for him to become a sports entertainer. But it seems that there’s foundational elements to the game that help men who transition from the sport.

As for Williams’ presentation on WWE programming, he has all of the star-making qualities that appeal to even the casual fan. At 6’5”, Williams is known for his outlandish outfits. The furs, the boots that he affectionately calls his “lemon pepper steppers,” plus the shades and jewelry. It all pops off the screen. But I think the singular biggest part of his presentation is his bass-heavy theme song. Since his developmental days in WWE NXT, audiences have chanted “Whoop that trick!” every time Williams has made his way down to the ring.

The lights are shining brighter

Now that Williams is on the main roster, larger audiences are getting hip to what all the rave was about in developmental. It’s now, on Friday Night SmackDown, where we see audiences of thousands chant to Williams’ theme song. As someone who might be flipping through channels, it grabs your attention. For fans who maybe haven’t tapped in with the product in some time, the energy harkens back to one of yesteryear.

Crowd participation was a hallmark of WWE’s “Attitude Era.” So, there’s something nostalgic about a crowd joining in unison. Think about how crazy fans go to “yeet” still. But another vestige of the Attitude Era is really good mic skills. Williams has that ability as well. He can talk people into the building and get you excited to see what his next matchup will be.

It’s so important to have crossover appeal as a WWE superstar. At 31, he still has a long career ahead of him. As he continues to put even bigger matches together, the sky’s the limit for him. His blend of charisma, athleticism and showmanship is exactly why he is the talk of the WWE town. And without question, this past Royal Rumble was his coming-out party. You won’t be able to miss him on this year’s road to Wrestlemania.
