Jared McCain, who is gaining fans both on and off the court as many people’s top Rookie of the Year pick, is injured and out indefinitely.
As NBA.com notes, McCain, who was the 16th pick in the first round for the Philadelphia 76ers, “is the leading scorer among rookies this season, averaging 15.3 points through the first 23 games.”
At the end of Friday’s game, he finished with five points and three assists in 29 minutes against the Pacers.
What we know about Jared McCain’s injury
As the Philadelphia 76ers reported, McCain “reported left knee soreness following last night’s game vs. Indiana.” On Saturday, “an MRI today revealed a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee. The injury will require surgery and he is out indefinitely.”
McCain has been a top pick for Rookie of the Year
McCain has been on a roll, scoring a career-high 34 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers in November. Also, as NBA.com notes in eight games this season, he has scored 20 or more points.
While he’s currently the Rookie of the Year favorite, this is a huge blow not only to his prospects for that, but to the Sixers’ prospects for their season, with the team already battling injuries with Joel Embiid, Kyle Lowry and Caleb Martin.
