The SEC Championship Game this weekend will see the No. 3 Texas Longhorns take on the Nov. 7 Georgia Bulldogs. This current season was their first year in the Southeastern Conference, moving from the Big 12 Conference. This means this is also their first SEC Championship match. Here’s a quick rundown one what to know right now:
What happened the last time Texas and Georgia faced off?
The schools last played each other in October Georgia won 30-15 as Texas players at home.
As the Associated Press reported, the game “produced one of the most chaotic and controversial scenes of the college football season. Longhorns fans upset about a pass interference penalty pelted the field with debris and briefly stopped the game, giving the officials time to huddle and reverse the call.” The SEC issued a $250,000 fine for the game and also threanted to ban alcohol at games moving forward.
This means that this match will probably be close and may ignite heightened fan reactions once again.
Bevo, the real-life Texas Longhorns mascot, can’t attend the game
The Texas Longhorns’ real-life mascot, Bevo has been ruled to be unable to be at the game. The current Bevo is Bevo XV, and he weights 1,700 pounds.
“We looked at alternatives,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said to Pat McAfee on ESPN, as CNN reported. “We have a limited space reality.”
“When we received the request for Bevo to be on the sideline in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, our staff looked at several alternatives including the sideline location,” SEC spokesman Chuck Dunlap added. “The reality is there is limited sideline space at the stadium. We can’t jeopardize the safety of Bevo or the game participants. With the narrow sidelines, location of multiple sets for television and camera carts, there is not enough space. While we want to honor tradition across the conference, the space limitation is a reality.”
What time does the Texas vs Georgia game come on and what channel?
The game comes on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. on ESPN, ABC and ESPN3. The College Gameday broadcast starts at 9 a.m.
Timothee Chalamet is the ‘College Gameday’ guest for the match
Dune star Timothee Chalamet, who can be seen soon in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, will appear on ESPN’s College Gameday in Atlanta.
As Yahoo! Sports noted, “Chalamet, who is a New York native, is a noted soccer fan, and a fan of the Knicks and Mets, but has not expressed much interest in American football. The 28-year-old actor also seemingly doesn’t have a connection to either school, which is typical for a guest picker.”
Game prediction: Will Texas or Georgia win
The game will likely be tight score-wise and it could go either way. Texas is ranked higher but Georgia beat them last time. Texas is on a five-game win streak, while Georgia has only won four of its last five. It looks like Texas could be the one to beat in this instance.
