Zayn Malik’s perception of love has changed, and it is because of this change that his perception of his past relationship with model Gigi Hadid has been affected.
In an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the former member of the popular boy band One Direction talked about his past relationship with Hadid, with whom he shares a daughter.
Malik talked about his perception of love and whether he was “in love” with Hadid during their time together.
“My understanding of love is always evolving. Back then, I might have believed it was love, but as I’ve aged, I’ve wondered if maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was lust, maybe it was this, maybe it was that. I don’t think it was love.”
Malik and Hadid started dating in 2015 and had an on-and-off relationship for several years before eventually splitting up. The two had a daughter together in 2020 before they parted ways.
“To say this on record, I will always love G because she’s the reason my child is here, and I have the utmost respect for her. I will always love her, but I don’t know if I was ever in love with her. When I first said it, I think people took it the wrong way. I have so much respect for this woman and I do love her—an immense amount—but no, I don’t think I was in love with her at that point; otherwise I would’ve been a better version of myself.”
He implied that his experiences as a young adult have influenced his current thinking, implying that he didn’t fully comprehend what love entailed at that time. The comments prompted swift reaction from social media users, with many fans pondering what differentiates loving someone from falling in love with them.
One social media commenter wrote, “The year is 2040, and Zayn is STILL promoting albums by reminding the world that he never was in love with Gigi. We heard you last year, Zayn.”
Another commenter pondered why Malik was making these comments, saying, “How does he claim to have utmost respect for her, then goes on a podcast with the PUBLIC to tell them that he never loved her… Mind you, his daughter will have to see this someday…”
Some social media users disapproved of Malik’s timing and manner in making these comments. One commenter wrote, “Such an odd and unnecessary thing to say about someone you’ve been with for six years, someone who carried your baby too. Shame.”
Others, however, seemed to think that Malik’s comments were not negative but rather reflective. A social media commenter wrote, “So he’s basically saying, ‘I love her… but my past self didn’t fully understand what love was.’ That’s like buying a houseplant and later realizing you weren’t ready to water it properly.”
Hadid has not made any comments on Malik’s statements.
