Well, well, well. Someone just lit a match and threw it into the powder keg of pop culture. Swedish pop darling Zara Larsson is stirring the glittery pot, and this time, it’s not with a high-note or a TikTok dance challenge. In a new Rolling Stone interview, Larsson clutches her feminist pearls and takes a not-so-subtle jab at artists who still collaborate with controversial producer Dr. Luke. And yes, the internet is already dragging Katy Perry into the mess like it’s 2017.
Let’s get into it, shall we?
“Is It Really Really Important for Him to Come Back?” Zara Asks, Serving Scandinavian Ice Queen Realness
Speaking to Rolling Stone with the energy of a woman who’s just thrown a martini in someone’s face and walked out in a fur coat, Zara said:
“There’s a million other people. Is it really really important for him to come back? I don’t think so. I personally wouldn’t do it because what is he gonna do for me or for anyone else?”
Now that’s what we call passive-aggressive poetry.
Zara didn’t name names, but social media did what it does best: drew lines in blood-red lipstick. Fans instantly connected her comments to Katy Perry, who recently dropped her comeback album 143, a record produced in part by Dr. Luke, the industry heavyweight who’s been embroiled in controversy since Kesha accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her in a now-infamous lawsuit that lasted nearly a decade.
Though Dr. Luke has always denied the allegations and the two settled in 2023 just weeks before trial, the stench of industry silence still lingers, and Zara clearly isn’t here for it.
“I think that the most powerful thing you can do is to actually put your money where your mouth is,” Zara added. “Work with women and hire women and do all of that. So I think that’s way more powerful than writing a feminist anthem with someone who is not really standing for those values.”
Yikes. Not even a “no shade” disclaimer. Just a slow-burn drag dressed in feminist theory.
KatyCats Are Seething: “Ungrateful Loser,” “Flop Era,” and “Khia Asylum” Trend
Now, if you were wondering whether fans would let this one slide, girl, they did not.
One Twitter user had an emotional meltdown in 280 characters:
“1) you are an ungrateful loser, Zara Larsson. Because Katy always supported you even in your flop eras when NOBODY cared about it. 2) Many other artists worked with Dr. Luke but you were silent until Katy’s time. 3) Good luck in khia asylum. Hope you stay there forever.”
The Katy Perry defense squad is out here doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics, accusing Zara of biting the hand that fed her, since she once opened for Perry on tour (yes, when Zara’s only hits were on Spotify playlists titled Pop Girlies With Potential).
Another person, clearly offended on behalf of Miss “Teenage Dream,” tweeted:
“Katy let her open for her cuz she wouldn’t be able to fill a venue like her even at her peak… I love Zara but why does she need to drag Katy into this… everyone is so ungrateful.”
Oop. Not the not-even-at-her-peak dig.
Meanwhile, some are calling out the performative nature of Zara’s “girl power” proclamation. One tweet reads:
“Zara is wonderful and she’s not wrong in some of the things she says here, but it seems like she’s just another person trying to go viral on Katy Perry’s name because she understands that it’s profitable. Why didn’t she say this before? And by the way, her latest works were written and produced by men.”
That part. Feminism isn’t a one-time press quote, babe. It’s a résumé.
The Internet Is Divided, But Zara Isn’t Budging
While some are dragging Zara to filth, others are living for the drama. One tweet simply said:
“zara larsson clocking katy perry ouh…”
And another:
“mind u zara isn’t even calling luke or his other collaborators out, this is a direct attack to katy perry personally.”
Honestly? Fair. Because if Zara wanted to call out Dr. Luke, she could’ve easily named one of the dozens of male artists who still work with him. But she didn’t. She went for the queen of whipped cream bras and cherry Chapstick.
This is giving Mean Girls in popstar couture. It’s giving The Hunger Games, but everyone’s wearing glitter and eyeliner. It’s giving The View meets RuPaul’s Drag Race finale.
