Yellowstone is giddying up for another spinoff.
The Season 5 finale (which many after theorized could potentially be the series finale) of Yellowstone provided the perfect setup for another project in the Yellowstone universe, a direct spinoff involving Beth (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip (Cole Hauser).
The setup, however, is bloody.
What happened in the ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 finale?
According to Vanity Fair, the Season 5 finale involves Beth tracking down her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley), who played a part in their father John’s (Kevin Costner) death. Jamie then physically beats his sister until Rip shows up, who distracts Jamie long enough for Beth to fatally stab him. The husband and wife then decide to frame Jamie for John’s death as well as move away from the Dutton ranch to a new ranch of their own.
The new spinoff has been in the works for a while, and it’s not clear how long fans will have to wait before the spinoff is ready for the airwaves. But the fact that a spinoff is anticipated by fans shows just how powerful the Yellowstone franchise continues to be.
What we know about the Kelly Reilly/Cole Hauser ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff so far
While official details have not been confirmed, Reilly and Hauser recently closed official deals for the spinoff, Deadline reported.
Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva wrote, “Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone and its ever-expanding universe, is working on the creative for the new show, which will likely feature other cast members from the mothership series alongside Reilly and Hauser, I hear. Led by Yellowstone characters played by the same actors in the same present-day time frame, the new offshoot shares the most DNA with the mothership of any shows in the Yellowstone universe to date, which explains why it will be the first spinoff to carry Yellowstone in the title, sources said.”
The report cautions the fact that this means that the original Yellowstone may not return.
“While the intent remains to continue the story in Yellowstone and a source indicated that doing another season was not completely out of the question, the focus ultimately returned to doing it in a new series, I hear,” Andreeva continued. “That would allow Paramount Network’s parent Paramount Global to keep the show within the company’s ecosystem unlike the mothership series, which has a pre-existing exclusive streaming deal with NBCUniversal’s Peacock.”

Season 5 of Yellowstone has had plenty of twists and turns already, even without the bloody ending and a soft launch of a brand new series. Towards the end of the series, fan-favorite character Colby (Denim Richards), a Black cowboy among the cast of characters, died in a surprise accident. The shocking death sent fans reeling since Colby had been a character in the series since the very beginning.
Fans immediately took to social media to express their shock. His death wasn’t the only shock fans had to contend with. And if the diehard among them decide to watch the spinoff, there will be even more emotional moments ahead.
