Winston-Salem State pulls from CIAA to hire next basketball coach

Winston-Salem State University has turned to a proven winner to lead its men’s basketball program, naming Lester “Jay” Butler as its new head coach.

The news of the hire was first reported by HBCU Gameday.

Butler, who spent the past 11 seasons at Virginia Union University, inherits a Rams program looking to recover from a 7-19 overall record and a 2-13 finish in the CIAA last season.

“Jay Butler brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of success,” said Eric Burns, WSSU’s interim director of athletics, in a statement. “Throughout this national search, we sought a leader who could elevate our program competitively while developing young men both in competition and in life. Coach Butler embodies those qualities, and we are excited to welcome him to Ram Nation.”

Butler is a proven winner

At Virginia Union, Butler compiled a 372-239 career record highlighted by nine 20-win seasons, eight NCAA Division II tournament appearances, and multiple CIAA titles. This past season, he earned his third CIAA Coach of the Year award while guiding his team to the CIAA Team High Academic Award. In 2023, he was recognized as the HBCU Jerry Johnson NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year and the NCAA Atlantic Region Co-Coach of the Year.

“I am honored to join Winston-Salem State University and lead this historic program,” Butler said. “WSSU has a proud tradition, passionate supporters and a strong commitment to student success. I look forward to building a championship culture that reflects the values of this university and prepares our student-athletes for success on and off the court.”

Butler’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for the Rams, who continue to build on their legacy within one of the nation’s most competitive Division II conferences.
