Hilary Duff was overcome with emotion on Friday as she sat down for an interview on CBS Mornings and talked openly about the feud she’s having with her sister, Haylie Duff. Hilary revealed on the show that her new song, “We Don’t Talk,” is about her relationship with her sister.
“It’s definitely about my sister and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence. It’s not having my sister in my life at the moment, and I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record,” Hilary said in the interview, per People.
The 38-year-old singer said she decided to put the song on her album, luck… or something, because it’s her “truth.”
“So many people are having this experience [of estrangement], and for me, making a record was just going to be all about connection. I was never going to take outside songs from people…what would the point be, right, if it wasn’t me and it wasn’t my life?” she said.
The former child star, who rose to fame as the star of Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, also opened up about the challenge of being in the public spotlight for her entire life and the process of being more open with her fans.
“I didn’t necessarily choose that part, but it’s my reality, and so it was honestly like healing to say,” she said. “It’s hard to watch your life unfold on the internet sometimes with talking heads on TikTok speculating this, that, and the other. Sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right.”
While she doesn’t know if her sister will hear her latest song or how she’ll feel about it, Hilary said she’s just happy to express her feelings.
“I’m not trying to say anything bad,” she said. “It’s literally just my experience, and that’s really all I feel like sharing.”
As she continued to talk about her family dynamics, Hilary revealed that another one of her songs, “The Optimist,” is about her tumultuous relationship with her father Bob.
“I think it’s really challenging for … one person to have major success in a family,” Hilary said in the interview, per the Seattle Times. “It’s hard to get back to a place of health. It takes everybody involved to be able to do that.”

While the reason for Hilary’s beef with Haylie is not completely clear, there are some speculations about the sisters’ differences in political views. Many of Hilary’s fans recognize her for her liberal views, while Haylie is speculated to be more conservative, Mamamia reported. Speculations about Haylie’s politics gained traction with fans once she moved to Texas.

In her young years, Hilary had a close relationship with her sister in public. The pair were often seen on the red carpet together. They also worked together on several projects, including the 2006 movie, Material Girls. However, the sisters haven’t been seen together in public in six years, and they don’t interact on social media, per Mamamia.
However, a source who spoke to Deuxmoi said the feud is not about politics, but part of the reason could be related to the fact that Haylie doesn’t get along with Hilary’s husband, Koma.

What did Hilary Duff say in her interview with Glamour?
Hilary continued to open up about her family’s relationship when she recently interviewed with Glamour.
“That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” she told the publication. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street … I’ve had a very complicated life and my parents had a very complicated thing.”
In her song, “We Don’t Talk,” Hilary said people still ask her about her relationship with her sister, but it’s sometimes hard to tell the truth.
“People ask me how you’re doing, I wanna say amazing but the truth is I don’t know, what I always end up saying it how we don’t talk,” Hilary sings. “I’m not sure when it happened, not even sure what it was about. If I did something different, would you feel something different? Would you at least let me hear you out?”
