The Heisman Trophy finalists were announced yesterday, confirming the status of the top football players in the nation. Ashton Jeanty, Travis Hunter, Cam Ward And Dillon Gabriel were selected to be considered for the 79th Heisman Trophy. The winner will be announced on Saturday.
The award, which recognizes the most outstanding college football player in the country, has been given since 1935. The jury consists of 900 voters, including members of the media and former Heisman winners, according to ESPN. Jeanty and Hunter are favored to take home the trophy after significant wins with their respective teams, according to CBS Sports.
Ashton Jeanty
Hailing from Frisco, Texas, Jeanty is a junior running back at Boise State University. He has rushed for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns, according to CBS Sports. He helped his team win a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.
Travis Hunter
Hunter has played as both wide receiver and cornerback at The University of Colorado. He has recorded 92 receptions, received 14 touchdowns and rushed 1,152 yards. Named offensive player of the year, Hunter was selected as All-Big 12 first-team receiver, according to ESPN.
Cam Ward
Ward is a senior quarterback at The University of Miami. He was recently selected as Associated Press offensive player of the year and newcomer of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to ESPN. After high school, he received an offer from FCS Incarnate Word and eventually worked his way up in college football. He currently holds the record at his school with 36 passing touchdowns, 4,123 passing yards, 4,319 total yards and 343.6 passing yards per game, as well as 41 total touchdowns.
Dillon Gabriel
Originally from Mililani, Hawaii, Gabriel is a senior quarterback at The University of Oregon. He transferred from the University of Oklahoma during the offseason and helped the Oregon Ducks to the Big Ten championship in its first season in the conference. Gabriel’s career total of 187 touchdowns is the highest in NCAA history, according to ESPN.
