HGTV’s Rehab Addict has been canceled and removed from all of the network’s platforms after the show’s producer and star, Nicole Curtis, was caught using a racial slur during the taping of an episode.
What did Nicole Curtis say?
On Wednesday, Radar Online released a video of Curtis, 49, working on a house. She was seen struggling with something and said, “Oh fart N-word.” After saying that, she immediately said, “What the f**k is that that I just said? Nick, you gotta, can you kill that? F**k my life.” The man responded, saying that he had some time left and could not scrap it.
A source revealed some details about the footage to the outlet, stating that it has been circulating among the production company that worked with Curtis on the show.
“When something happens, we all know about it. … This footage has made it around to the (production) community she (has) screwed over,” the unnamed source told Radar Online.
The insider added, “You (Nicole) deserve everything you get. Treat us with dignity and respect, and quit making money off of our backs. … You are a trash human.”
According to an unnamed source, the clip of Curtis using the racial epithet was filmed about two years ago.
HGTV’s response to Curtis using the N-word
HGTV released an official statement following Curtis’ actions during a taping of a Radar Addict episode.
“HGTV was recently made aware of an offensive racial comment made during the filming of Rehab Addict. Not only is language like this hurtful and disappointing to our viewers, partners, and employees — it does not align with the values of HGTV,” the network said in a statement obtained by Fox 2.
The network continued, “Accordingly, we have removed the series from all HGTV platforms. We remain dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and inclusion across our content and our workplace.”
What did Nicole Curtis say in her apology?
According to the Detroit Free Press, on Wednesday evening, Curtis shared a post in her Instagram Stories and wrote: “There is more to this, but my family comes first and I need to be mom right now more than anything else. I will take the time to be as I’ve always been with you, transparent and honest. TMZ called me as I had just turned my phone on after being at school — I said this briefly — but there is more.”
In the next Story, she shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a text message she sent to TMZ.
“Regarding HGTV, I’m grateful for the 15-year journey we’ve shared,” the text screenshot read. “It’s been a meaningful chapter, but my focus isn’t on my career.”
She continued, “My focus, at this moment is rightfully on my relationships, and my community — the people who truly know my character and where my heart is. I want to be clear: the word in question is wrong and not part of my vocabulary and never has been, and l apologize to everyone.”
“As discussed, I’m a mom and I was doing mom things all day and unplugged. I realize my shows were airing, but my family is my priority and I’m just catching up to all this now,” Curtis concluded her statement.
The footage and Curtis’ removal were revealed on Wednesday, the same day HGTV had originally scheduled Episodes 3 and 4 of Season 9 to be aired on the network, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Curtis was the host of Rehab Addict, a show in which the reality star would travel to cities nationwide and rehab homes. The show was mostly filmed in Minnesota, with multiple seasons later shot in Detroit.
