‘What a Journey:’ SC State brings HBCU championship celebration home

On a cool winter afternoon, the South Carolina State football team shared in the revelry of its HBCU national championship with a parade through the streets of Orangeburg.

It has been more than a month since the Bulldogs’ epic overtime Celebration Bowl win over Prairie View to capture the program’s second Black college championship in four seasons.

Wednesday’s parade and pep rally led the team through Orangeburg neighborhoods to Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, where the team displayed the MEAC and Celebration Bowl championship trophies.

On Monday, SC State’s flag flew high over the State Capitol building in honor of the team’s triumphant win.

Lawmakers requested by letter that Gov. Henry McMaster honor the authorization on Dec. 15 and 16.

The flag was presented to the team during its victory parade, serving as a lasting symbol of the Bulldogs’ championship following the State House observance.

“What a journey. What a journey we had,” said head coach Chennis Berry.

Several players enjoyed the overwhelming support from fans and the community along the parade route and pep rally.

“I’m so proud of each of your — every player and coach who trusted the process,” he said.
