Fayetteville State women’s basketball coach Tyreece Brown issued a stern reminder of the Broncos’ reputation following their 49-46 win over Bowie State in the CIAA semifinals Friday night.
“We don’t want y’all. We want Gannon. We want Indiana (Pa),” Brown said in answering a question from HBCU Gameday’s Steven J. Gaither about Saturday’s championship game against Winston-Salem State.
Fayetteville State’s crowd in Baltimore was heard chanting “We Want Winston” after the final buzzer sounded, and Gaither asked Brown about it.
“Y’all want us. We’re the back-to-back champions. Don’t create that narrative ‘Winston-Salem against Everybody when Winston-Salem hasn’t been winning anything.’”

Brown was complimentary of Winston-Salem head coach Tierra Terry and the turnaround in her first year leading her alma mater. The Rams (25-3) took down Claflin 67-32 to advance to the championship game earlier Friday afternoon.
“Shout out to Coach Terry, she’s doing a helluva job, but y’all should want us because we’re the ones that are winning.”
Brown, a former Fayetteville State men’s basketball player, has led the Broncos to a 21-4 record so far this season and to the NCAA Division II tournament in each of his first two seasons in charge, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2024.
