UMES women’s hoops off to best start in quarter century

The Maryland Eastern Shore women’s basketball team just keeps rolling.

The Hawks pulled out a gritty 68–61 overtime win over Coppin State on Thursday night, moving to 4–0 in MEAC play — their best conference start in more than 25 years.

Ashanti Lynch was unstoppable, putting up 28 points, 15 rebounds, and two steals in a dominant performance. Kaliya Perry chipped in 11 points, six boards and two blocks, while playing a key role down the stretch.

With the win, Maryland Eastern Shore improves to 11–10 overall and 4–0 in the conference — their best MEAC start since the 1990–91 season.

“We’re here for making history, setting records and being the first to do everything,” said Lynch about the streak.

UMES got off to a strong start, finishing the first quarter up 21–15 and taking a 33–27 lead into halftime. Kalise Hill powered the third-quarter surge with four quick buckets, and the Hawks looked in control before Coppin State battled back late.

The Eagles briefly snatched a one-point lead in the fourth, but Desi Taylor’s clutch back-to-back 3-pointers tied things up and sent the game into overtime.

From there, it was all Hawks — they locked down on defense, holding Coppin State scoreless in the extra frame, and closed it out at the line behind Perry and Lynch.

The Hawks are flying high right now, and they don’t seem ready to come down anytime soon.

“Since we’re No. 1 in the conference, everybody is gonna give us their best shot,” said Lynch. “It’s about who is the toughest and who has the most dawgs.”
