Tre’ Johnson Dies: Former NFL Player Was 54

Tre’ Johnson, the former All-Pro NFL offensive lineman, who played for the Washington Commanders (previously known as the Redskins), has died at age 54.

Johnson’s wife, Irene Johnson, shared the sad news in a Facebook post, saying he died suddenly during a family trip, according to NBC News.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip,” Johnson wrote in her Facebook post. “His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock.”

Tre’ Johnson attended Peekskill High School in his native New York City before playing college football at Temple University

In 1994, the Washington Redskins selected Johnson as the 31st overall pick. Johnson played with Washington from 1994 to 2000. He played for the Cleveland Browns for a year before returning to the Redskins for his final season in 2002.

The standout lineman made the Pro Bowl in 1999, while the Associated Press selected him to the All-Pro second team that season.

“He was known for his durability and strength during his time in Washington,” Irene’s Facebook post read. “He loved the game and prided himself on his tremendous knowledge of it.”

Tre’ Johnson is remembered as a loving family man, friend and mentor

Following his football career, Johnson worked as a history teacher, a coach, and a mentor at Landon School in Bethesda, MD. Irene said on Facebook that her husband loved his job, but recent health issues forced him to take time away.

“He was beloved by the young male students he mentored and the faculty,” Irene said.

She’s remembering her late husband as “a devoted and loving father.”

“Tre’ lived for his kid’s sports activities and supported them through every practice and game until he took his last breath,” she wrote. “He shared his passion for Frenchie’s and riding his motorcycle with me and his fellow biking buddies.”
