For eight seasons, The Rookie on ABC has engaged its fans with case-of-the-week thrills. Over time, that has turned into a growing online obsession through catchy TikToks and viral moments.
A formula that has kept viewers hooked
The cast attributes part of The Rookie’s longevity to its ability to blend the public’s fascination with crime procedurals with other genres.
“It’s like a crazy story every day,” Alyssa Diaz, who portrays Angela Lopez, told Blavity’s Shadow and Act in a recent interview.
“You are coming across interesting characters; it’s built-in drama with a hero and a bad guy,” she said, later mentioning the show’s ability to allow viewers to explore gray areas as an aid to its success.
“It doesn’t make it so black and white, then you start exploring all the different facets of what’s involved in real life.”
Balancing real life beyond the badge
Mekia Cox, who plays Detective Nyla Harper, joined the series in Season 2. Her character left the unpredictable world of undercover work and returned to uniformed duty to create a more stable life for her daughter.
Throughout the series, she and Diaz become partners and, as the show’s leading women detectives, evolve into one of its most compelling duos.
According to Cox, the reason their characters resonate goes deeper than plot. She explained that their dynamic developed organically, as the story naturally positioned them as a detective duo that “just worked.”
“It was really beautiful. It bloomed into a friendship on screen and off, which is why I think it translates so well; they see the real chemistry,” Cox said.
The two shared how grateful they were that the series incorporated both of their pregnancies into the storyline, reflecting real life rather than sidelining women from active duty.
“Cops get pregnant too,” Cox said.
Diaz followed up by sharing how the pair’s real-life maternal instincts align with the fearless characters they portray.
“There’s a protective, primal, intuitive aspect to it,” she said. “I think it really lends well to being a detective and a mother; they go hand in hand. And I don’t feel like we’ve explored that very much on cop shows.”
Building a TikTok universe
When the two aren’t busy planning playdates for their kids or supporting each other as they balance motherhood with demanding filming schedules, they are creating TikToks that have helped place the show at the center of online virality.
The Rookie’s TikTok “universe” includes more than 3.1 million followers who engage with behind-the-scenes footage, interview clips, cast pranks and challenges.
The pair credit the cast’s willingness to have fun, along with a genuine sense of community, as a major driver behind the show’s success, particularly among younger audiences.
“It’s really wonderful to be on a show that spans so many generations,” said Cox, who has been dubbed the cast’s “TikTok Queen.”
She added, “I’ve had entire families come up to me and say, ‘We have three generations watching your show,’ which is really beautiful. Then, tapping into this younger generation is surreal. … There are a lot of people who have said, ‘I didn’t even, I haven’t even seen your show. I know your show through TikTok,’” she said with a laugh.
What’s next for Lopez and Harper
Understandably, some of their most viewed clips are short snippets showing how the series is filmed, along with trailers that tease what’s ahead.
When asked if they could share any spoilers about what’s next for their characters this season, they revealed that the partnership between Lopez and Harper will remain central to the show’s momentum. Viewers can expect more high-stakes adventures, with a stronger lean into thriller elements that are sure to shake up the series’ emotional core.
The Rookie airs new episodes on ABC on Mondays at 10 p.m. and streams the following day on Hulu.
