Tennessee State hires player-caller who led MEAC top offense

Tennessee State football has made a move to help the Tigers fledging offense.

Reggie Barlow has hired Matt Leone as offensive coordinator.

For those who keep tabs on FCS football, Leone isn’t a stranger. His resume reads like that of a coach who knows how to light up a scoreboard.

At North Carolina Central, Leone orchestrated an offense that didn’t just move the ball — it exploded down the field. His Eagles averaged nearly 34 points a game last year, and their quarterback, Walker Harris, turned into a record-breaking passer under Leone’s guidance.

That kind of production is something hoped to be translated to a TSU offense that finished last in the OVC-Big South in points, rushing and passing in 2025.

Leone’s arrival couldn’t come at a more crucial time for TSU. The Tigers have been searching for consistency on offense — a spark that can complement their physical defense.

He’s known for bringing balance to his play calling — running backs get their shine, quarterbacks get their rhythm — but above all, his teams score.

And it’s not just about strategy for Leone. Coming from programs known for player development, he’s been praised for helping offenses grow into formidable threats.
