Ted White stood at the podium at Howard University on Wednesday morning and took a deep breath.
The new head football coach — a proud Howard alumnus and former Bison quarterback — smiled as he looked out over a packed room of university leaders, alumni, and former teammates.
The moment, he said, was “full circle.”
“Thirty years ago, I stepped on this campus as a young man full of dreams,” White said, his voice shaking slightly. “Howard didn’t just educate me. It shaped me. It made me. I’m proud to be a Howard man.”
White, who played quarterback for the Bison in the early 1990s before embarking on an NFL and coaching career, has returned to lead the program where his football journey began.
“This is not a rebuild,” White declared. “This is a reawakening.”
A Full-Circle Moment
Before White spoke, the university paused to recognize another football trailblazer who helped pave his path — former Super Bowl–winning quarterback Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to win an NFL championship.
“Before I even knew we had a coaching vacancy,” Howard athletics director Kerry Davis recalled, “Doug called me and said, ‘Ted White’s your next man.’”
Williams, who was in attendance, smiled and simply said, “I’m home,” as the crowd erupted in applause.
Building a Legacy on and Off the Field
White’s message was about more than football. He pledged to align the program’s culture with the university’s reputation for excellence, stressing values like character, accountability, and leadership.
“Howard is elite,” White said. “Our expectation is that our football program reflects that same excellence.”
“We’re not just developing football players,” he said. “We’re developing complete men prepared to win in life.”
In response to questions about how he plans to navigate the modern era of college athletics — including the NIL landscape and transfer portal — White emphasized the balance between opportunity and integrity.
“You don’t want NIL to take over college football, but it’s here,” he said. “Our administration has shown a commitment to providing for our players, and that allows us to attract Power Five-caliber talent to Howard.”
He added that he had already begun recruiting from the transfer portal, reconnecting with players who once considered leaving. “The opportunity you get here at Howard outweighs any money you’ll receive somewhere else,” he said. “It’s nothing like Howard University.”

A Homecoming Rooted in Passion
Asked later about the emotions behind his remarks, White smiled. “It’s excitement. It’s gratitude. It’s anxiousness to get started,” he said, recalling his own recruitment to Howard in 1993 under then-coach Steve Wilson. “Back then, Howard was coming off a national championship, and the atmosphere was electric. I want our players to experience that same energy.”
White’s closing words captured both reverence and resolve. “We’re turning up the pride in Greene Stadium,” he said. “We’re restoring the belief and raising expectations. Howard made me — now it’s time to make Howard proud again.
