SZA recently opened up about a decision she’d like to take back-the Brazilian Butt Lift she got-in a candid new interview with Vogue magazine. The R&B sensation, responsible for the chart-topping album SOS and all its empowering lyrics, has come clean; while she felt pleased post-procedure, these days she views the decision as one born from insecurity rather than necessity.
As SZA reflected on her reasons for undergoing the surgery in 2022, she related it to a period of frustration with her body. Having hit the gym and build muscle, she noticed her physique wasn’t taking on the shape she wanted, particularly in her glutes. “I was trying to get a phat booty, but no matter how much I worked out, it just wasn’t happening,” she said.
So, she opted for surgery. At first, everything just seemed perfect; she loved her new look and felt way more confident in her body. But, as SZA explained, there came the reality of post-surgery recovery, with its challenges she hadn’t anticipated. “I gained all this weight from being immobile while recovering and trying to preserve the fat,” she said. “It was just so stupid.”
In the interview, SZA was annoyed by the decision, acknowledging that temporary changes to her body didn’t bring the lasting peace she may have looked for. “But who gives a fck? You got a BBL, you realize you didn’t need the sht. It doesn’t matter,” she said, being nonchalant about it. “I’ll do a whole bunch more sht just like it if I want to before I’m fcking dead because this body is temporary.”
The star has come to change her view about her BBL, admitting that while she loves her new curves, the procedure wasn’t the fix-all she earlier considered it. “It just wasn’t super necessary,” she mused. “I have other sht that I need to work on about myself… I need to get my fcking mental health together.”
SZA’s candidness forms a juncture with other celebrities who talk about how horrible they sometimes feel after an operation. In recent years, numerous stars have let out complaints about dissatisfaction with their cosmetic procedures and the pressures expected of them in light of beauty standards. Once upon a time, plastic surgery had its fair share of stigma; really, these confessions reflect a sort of much larger reality: it is complex and rarely permanent.
For SZA, the BBL was not a quick fix for deeper insecurities. “Not to say you can’t do those things simultaneously,” she clarified. “Just, for me, I realize wherever you go, there you’ll be.” Translation: no matter how much you change your outside, true contentment has to originate from within.
Though she had somewhat of a change of heart about the procedure, SZA was quick to assure that she loves her body-moving booty. “I love my butt. Don’t get me wrong. My booty looks nice. And I’m grateful that it looks pretty much… I don’t know, sometimes natural, but I don’t even care. It’s something that I wanted. I’m enjoying it. I love shaking it.”
