Stryker Cyber Attack: Pro-Iran Hackers Claim Incident On US Medical Device Maker

Stryker, a Michigan-based medical device producer, shared in a statement that the company has been attacked by pro-Iran hackers. According to the statement, the company “is experiencing a global network disruption” due to the cyberattack,” per CNN.

“We have no indication of ransomware or malware and believe the incident is contained,” Stryker told CNN. “Our teams are working rapidly to understand the impact of the attack on our systems. Stryker has business continuity measures in place to continue to support our customers and partners.”

The impact of the cyberattack against Stryker

Newsweek reported that thousands of employees were unable to access their work servers after the attack on Stryker. The company’s network of connected devices were forced into a shutdown while various medical products were forced to be disabled.

Stryker is still working to restore some of the devices that are now out-of-order. The company’s shares dropped over 3% after the cyberattack, per CNN.

A Pro-Iran group claimed cyberattack against Stryker

According to the Irish Examiner via Newsweek, the hackers displayed a logo associated with Handala, an Iranian regime engaged in conflict with the U.S. and Israel.

On Wednesday, the hackers claimed responsibility for the attack on Stryker via social media, according to CNN. The group said they are retaliating for the recent missile attack, which killed 168 children at an elementary school in Iran.

Stryker may have become a target due to its business association with Israel, the Irish Examiner reported.

What is Stryker?

Stryker is hailed as one of the biggest medical device makers in the world. The company produces a range of tools that includes defibrillators and ambulance cots, CNN reported. Over 150 million patients rely on Stryker for medical equipment.

Stryker operates servers in Ireland and those computers were also impacted by the cyberattack, according to the Irish Examiner.
