Southern University basketball made it a night to remember Friday, with both the men’s and women’s teams punching their tickets to the SWAC championship games on dramatic, last-second shots.
In the men’s SWAC Tournament semifinal, junior guard Michael Jacobs — one of the top scorers in America — delivered the defining moment, sinking a game-winning 3-pointer to lift the Jaguars to a stunning 73-70 win over Florida A&M.
The shot ignited an eruption from Southern fans inside the Gateway Center and sent the team into Saturday’s SWAC Championship game versus Prairie View.
Not to be outdone, the Lady Jaguars mirrored the moment of magic just hours earlier. Jocelyn Tate drained a clutch shot with 1.1 seconds left in regulation of the women’s semifinal to knock off No. 1 seed Alabama A&M.

The finishes marked one of the most thrilling evenings in recent memory for the Baton Rouge-based program, with both squads showing poise under pressure and championship resolve.
Southern’s double dose of buzzer-beating drama now sets up a Saturday to remember, as the men’s and women’s teams each vie for conference championships — and NCAA Tournament berths.
