Southern Jaguars remain winless in SWAC. Now on historic losing streak

Christian Peters led Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a decisive 40-21 victory over Southern on Saturday, ending the Golden Lions’ three-game losing streak in Southwestern Athletic Conference action.

Peters delivered a standout performance, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-5, 2-3 SWAC) build a commanding halftime lead. He found the end zone on a 20-yard run and connected with Ellis Stewart on a 31-yard touchdown pass to put his team ahead 24-7 at intermission.

Peters struck again in the third quarter with a 32-yard scoring toss to Stewart, extending the Lions’ lead to 37-7 with just under seven minutes remaining in the period.

The junior quarterback completed 21 of 32 passes for 231 yards with one interception. Stewart finished with four receptions for 83 yards and two scores. Jaylen Jennings powered the ground game, rushing 25 times for 99 yards and a touchdown, while DJ Stevenson also added a rushing score for a balanced Arkansas-Pine Bluff attack.

Southern (1-8, 0-5 SWAC) saw quarterbacks Ashton Strother and Cam’Ron McCoy each throw touchdown passes to Darren Morris. McCoy contributed a rushing touchdown as well, but the Jaguars were unable to rally after falling behind early.  The Jaguars are on a current seven-game losing streak, the longest in program history.
