Sophia Bush Calls on White People to “Show Up” for Black Communities at NAACP Image Awards

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush has been using her time on the red carpet at the NAACP Image Awards to send a message to white Americans: Step up and support Black communities.

While chatting with reporters on the red carpet over the weekend, Sophia discussed her time at the awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements in film, television, music, and literature by people of color.

“It’s always political,” Sophia said. “As the white friend at this event, I’m gonna say to the women who look like me, to the men who look like me, it’s incredibly important to remember that so much of what we love in America comes from Black culture.”

Sophia, a renowned actress and activist, went on to highlight the disparity between being a consumer of culture and being a participant in society.

“And white people need to show up for Black people the way they show up to be entertained by Black culture,” Sophia continued. “So given who’s in office and given what we’re seeing happening to Black and brown communities in our country, we better get our s— together.”

#SophiaBush told #WhitePeople to step it up at the NAACPlmageAwards-because silence is still choosing the status quo. #Allyship On the red carpet, Bush stood with her best friend and Union Heritage partner Nia Batts and directed her message to white folks: use your voice, your access, and your influence-consistently-not only when it’s trending. Accountability is action, not vibes, and real allyship shows up in policies, workplaces, and daily choices. #niabatts
