Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Hulu Has Passed on ‘Buffy’ Revival

The decision not to move forward with the revival of the series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, comes after the streaming service reviewed a pilot episode directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao.

The proposed revival of the series had Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as the iconic vampire slayer, but as a mentor to a new slayer, Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

This would have been a big comeback for Sarah Michelle Gellar, who had been reluctant to return to the role after the series ended in 2003, after running for six seasons between 1997 and 2003. It is reported that Zhao’s passion for the series convinced the actor to return to the role of Buffy.

Gellar announced the news to fans on Instagram, expressing her sadness that Hulu had decided not to move forward with the proposed revival.

“So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale. I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you and this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beat me.”

The cancellation of the revival series sparked a series of reactions from fans of the supernatural series. Some fans expressed their disappointment over the missed opportunity to see a new chapter of the Buffy universe.

“I guess the buffy reboot getting cancelled it’s good news bc we all know it would’ve been bad but ngl im kinda sad about losing the only opportunity to give tillow the endgame they deserve and i know that even if it got released probably we wouldn’t get tillow anyway but idk, it was nice to have a little bit of hope,” a fan expressed.

Other fans, however, think that the cancellation of the revival series would ensure the legacy of the original.

“A bummer, but I dunno, maybe it’s okay. Buffy is one of my favorite and most important shows ever, but I also feel like every single thing doesn’t need a legacy sequel,” a fan stated, mentioning the fact that Gellar had been attached to a pilot for a Cruel Intentions series, which did not come to fruition.

Another fan stated, “Buffy’s legacy remains intact without a reboot to bring it down, amen.”

Although the pilot for the series passed, Hulu remains interested in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer IP and other potential franchise opportunities.
