Rosalía Faces Backlash Over Pablo Picasso Remarks, Releases Emotional TikTok Apology

Rosalía

The Spanish singer apologized after she faced backlash for her statements about separating the works of the famous painter Pablo Picasso from his life.

The Spanish singer stated her regret for what she said and acknowledged the fact that she discussed the famous painter without having enough knowledge about the allegations of how the painter treated women.

The apology comes after the singer stated that it’s possible to separate the painter’s works from his life.

Singer Says She Wasn’t “At Peace” With Her Comments

The Spanish singer expressed regret for what she had said about the painter. She stated she had been thinking about the issue for a few days and then decided to discuss it.

“Hey, I’ve wanted to make this video for days, but I wanted to choose the right words. I’m not comfortable with what happened when I talked about Picasso’s topic. I’m not at peace with what I said about Picasso.”

The singer went on to say that many people had told her to keep quiet about the issue.

“Everyone says I shouldn’t make a video, shouldn’t respond, shouldn’t say anything. But I personally am not at peace.”

Says She Was Unaware of Abuse Allegations

The Spanish singer stated she didn’t know much about the life of the famous painter.

“It’s important not to talk about certain things when you don’t have enough knowledge. I personally thought Picasso was a great man, as people have said before. But I didn’t know there were real cases of abuse.”

She apologized for what she called a lack of empathy towards the women who had shared their experiences with the painter.

“I want to apologize if I showed a lack of empathy during that conversation and for not empathizing with these women and their testimonies,” she said.

Reflects on the Pressure of Public Interviews

The singer also reflected on the interviews she gave while promoting the album, which she believes led to the mistake.

“I talked nonstop. I talked a lot while promoting,” she said. “When you spend so many hours talking, at some point you might say something that doesn’t make sense.”

Rosalía believes the critics were “absolutely right” and will do her best to learn more about the topic.

“It’s true I made a mistake,” she said. “Thanks for telling me. I’m going to try to learn more and do my best.”

Clarifies Her Position on Feminism

Rosalía also clarified her stance on feminism, stating that she is a fan of the movement and wants the message in her music to be feminist.

“I have nothing but love, respect, and gratitude for feminism,” she said.

She believes she is afraid to call herself a feminist because she may not be able to fully embody the movement’s ideals. However, she believes that the way she lives and the way she expresses herself with her music is very feminist.

“I think the way I live, the way I write, the way I perform and make music is very feminist,” she said.

Rosalía ended the video by thanking her fans for their support throughout the ordeal, explaining that the apology was for them, not for the critics.

“I’m not doing this video for the haters,” she said. “I’m doing it for the people who are always there. Thank you for always being there.”
