Report: Mo Williams leaving Jackson State for Kentucky assistant coaching position

The Mo Williams era at Jackson State is over.

Williams, who coached the Tigers to the SWAC championship game in 2025, is leaving the program to become an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, according to a report from Joe Tipton and Jack Pilgrim of On3.

Williams’ son Mason, who originally committed to Jackson State, reversed his decision and joined the Wildcat basketball program last week.

Williams spent the last six season coaching SWAC schools, first at Alabama State where he went 13-35 in two seasons before accepting the Jackson State job prior to the 2022-23 season.

In four seasons in Jackson, Williams’ record was 56-74, with a 47-25 record in conference games.

His best season was 2024-25 when JSU went 16-18 overall and 14-4 in SWAC play, good enough for the second seed.

The Tigers advanced to the conference championship game before falling to Alabama State 60-56.
