Get ready to laugh, swoon, and cringe in all the best ways, because Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is on its way, and with it, all the heart and hilarity that made Bridget the ultimate rom-com heroine. Renée Zellweger returns as the incomparable Bridget quirky, accident-prone, yet utterly relatable single woman who’s always just a little too candid about her messy lifestyle and love affairs. This time out, however, Bridget navigates life as a single mom and, naturally, attempts to work out her confusing, awkward, yet always amusing love life.
Bridget’s New Chapter: Same Old Chaos, New Adventures
These Bridget Jones movies have been a part of our pop culture since that first diary entry back in 2001, and now Bridget is back for the most challenging but fun chapter yet. In Mad About The Boy, it’s been four years since the tragic death of Bridget’s lovely husband Mark Darcy-we still miss you, Colin Firth-. Now, she’s a widow with two lovely kids: 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel. While Bridget navigates the ups and downs of motherhood, she’s also in a bit of an emotional limbo as she tries to get her life and maybe her heart on track.
But never fear, Bridget wouldn’t be Bridget if she didn’t approach every challenge with a mix of optimism, self-deprecating humor, and plenty of awkwardness. With the help of her eccentric Urban Family, Shazzer, Jude, Tom, and even the deliciously unreliable Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, Bridget is coaxed back into the dating scene and perhaps into love. But with her trademark absence of finesse and some very modern updates -hello, dating apps!-Bridget’s path is going to be a wildly comic ride.
Old Friends and New Faces
Of course, Bridget wouldn’t be Bridget without her fabulously eccentric supporting cast: Zellweger is joined once again by the cheeky, lovable Daniel Cleaver, and Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones as Bridget’s lovable, if somewhat bewildered, parents. And there’s a whole new crop of characters to meet, including the delightful Isla Fisher as Rebecca, Bridget’s bubbly new neighbor.
But the real spark comes courtesy of White Lotus star Leo Woodall, who plays this dreamy younger man ready to sweep Bridget off her feet. It’s a romance promising plenty of deliciously funny and tender moments as Bridget grapples with the idea of dating someone younger and, quite frankly, far more put-together than she is.
And of course, there’s the brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor as Billy’s somewhat perplexed science teacher, who becomes a surprisingly important figure in Bridget’s school-based-and love-based!-misadventures.
The Perfect Mix of Laughs and Heart
The trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy promises everything fans of the franchise have come to love: a whole lot of laughs, a little bit of cringe-worthy awkwardness, and a lot of heart. It’s all of Bridget’s mistakes, all of her moments of doubt that make her so very likable, and it’s crystal clear that even while trying to fight through the messiness of life usually failing-she’ll always come out the other side smiling, with a glass of wine in hand.
From the humorously awkward schoolyard drama to Bridget’s laugh-out-loud attempts at modern romance to the ongoing pepperings of challenges that come with being a mom, this film promises to be a charmer, delightful in equal measures to its predecessors. Plus, it is directed by the talented Michael Morris (To Leslie, Better Call Saul), so it is sure to have just the right mix of heart and humor.
A Global Phenomenon—And It’s Back!
Since the release of Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001, the Bridget Jones films have gone on to become a global phenomenon, grossing more than $800 million at the box office worldwide. The Bridget Jones name has become synonymous with romance, laughs, and that perfect combination of vulnerability and strength, and this new film is set to carry that legacy forward.
The franchise has always celebrated this messy, imperfect, wonderful journey called life who better to be in charge of such a journey than Bridget Jones?
