A Fisk University basketball player was reportedly killed in a shooting on a Nashville, Tennessee highway.
Police identified the victim as 20-year-old Andre Bell, a sophomore business administration major and member of Fisk’s men’s basketball team, according to various news reports.
The university confirmed his death following the incident that happened on Sunday along Interstate 65 North near the I-40 interchange.
Nashville police indicated Bell and two friends had been traveling back to campus after attending a gymnastics event at the fairgrounds when the shooting occurred. Investigators said the friends reported seeing a dark sedan driving alongside their car in the left lane before hearing several gunshots.

Bell was struck as their vehicle slowed and spun into traffic, colliding with a red pickup truck. The dark sedan continued traveling north on the interstate and has not been located, police said.
Bell was transported to a nearby hospital in extremely critical condition and later died from his injuries, according to authorities.
Fisk University expressed deep sorrow over Bell’s death.
“He was a dominant force on the Fisk University men’s basketball team, but he was most remembered for his infectious smile, loving personality, and unique ability to always bring warmth to a room,” said head coach Jeremiah Crutcher in a statement. “We now have a deep absence in our program, but more importantly, we have a deep pain in our hearts. He will be truly missed.”
