Luisa Espinoza

Recently, public anger in Ecuador was renewed over the case after online videos surfaced in 2026 that showed Luisa Espinoza dancing in what appeared to be a luxury home. This comes as the case involving thousands of alleged child pornography files remains unsolved since her arrest.

The Ecuadorian authorities confirmed that Luisa was arrested in February 2023 as part of a joint operation with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Thousands of files that contain child sexual abuse material were discovered in her possession.

Espinoza was charged as a suspected member of a transnational network that was involved in the distribution of child exploitation material. According to Ecuador’s Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code, or COIP, the crime can result in a sentence of up to 16 years in prison.

Despite the severity of the charges, Luisa was released from pretrial detention after spending two months in detention. This was after a judge ordered her freedom. This was criticized by prosecutors, leading to a complaint by the Prosecutor’s Office against the judge.

Since then, the case has been stuck in Ecuador’s justice system. A trial hearing scheduled for 2025 was cancelled, and the case remains unsolved.

Recently, renewed anger in Ecuador was sparked by the wide circulation of the online videos in 2026. In the online videos, Luisa Espinoza was seen dancing in what appears to be a luxury home. There have been questions raised over how someone who was accused of possessing over 10,000 files of child sexual abuse material can still be at large while the case remains unsolved.

On social media, online commentators have been demanding information from Ecuador’s National Police and the Prosecutor’s Office concerning the investigation. They want to know whether the authorities have been pursuing potential ties to other crime organizations.

The case is still being handled by Ecuador’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Transnational Crime, or FEDOTI.
