A TikTok video by a University of Mississippi student detailing her reasons for leaving the school has gone viral, and people are weighing in on their opinions on the situation.
Maggie Recco, who originally transferred to Ole Miss from Arizona before leaving for the University of Miami, posted a video explaining why she left Oxford, Mississippi, after attending there for a year.
Her grievances ranged from a lack of dining and shopping venues to a social scene she found to be phony.
“There’s literally nothing to do in Oxford,” Recco said in the video. “There’s no Target. The only grocery store is Walmart, which you can’t go to without running into everyone you know.”
She also complained about a lack of late-night dining options, saying that after 10 p.m., the only places open were fast-food restaurants, and drive-through wait times were over an hour.
She also complained about the nightlife in Oxford, saying that many venues close as early as 12:30 a.m. and have high cover charges.
“You’re paying 20 bucks minimum to get into the bar,” she said in the video, adding, “And on game days, it’s a lot higher than that. One time, it was 200 bucks to get into the bar.”
She told a particular story about her and her friends looking for a place to go at closing time.
“We got to this bar, they were asking 80 bucks to get in, with the bar closing in 30 minutes.”
She also complained about police activity in the Oxford nightlife scene, saying they were patrolling in uniforms on horseback, as well as undercover agents from alcohol control who raided venues regularly.
“The square is flooded with police,” she said in the video, adding, “Police on horses are just riding around, literally looking for underage students.”
Transportation issues were another source of frustration. While the airport was an hour and 20 minutes away in Memphis, Recco said that rideshare services were too costly. “If you’re gonna get an Uber, it’s gonna be like $150 just to go to the airport,” she said.
Recco also complained about what she said was an entitled attitude among many of her classmates. “Everyone’s just a little fake and spoiled and not used to being told no,” she said. “You’d think, because it’s a Southern school, but a lot of it feels fake hospitality.”
Parking tickets were another source of frustration. “I’ve gotten over $1,000 in tickets,” she said, adding that parking personnel took joy in issuing tickets. “They actually hate you.”
Recco concluded by describing her thoughts on the school. “The school is a summer camp for people who are 19 to 23,” she said. “It’s not real. It’s fake.”
Recco concluded the video by indicating she had been warned about the school. “They were right,” she said. “And now I’m gonna move to Miami, so I’ll be in a city I like.”
@maggiereccoo it sounds like im complaining but i cant w this place anymore #foru #olemiss
The video elicited a variety of responses, some supportive and others quite negative. One commenter said she had not made any friends and was having trouble adjusting to college. “Just had no friends,” she said.
Another commenter questioned the announcement’s public nature. “It’s your life decision,” the commenter wrote. “Log off the apps and start doing something important.”
A third commenter took a more sarcastic approach to Recco’s educational path, which took her to three different schools, saying she had to run the “hoe gauntlet.” This comment also generated a lot of interest on the site.
Do you think Maggie’s reasons are valid?
