Norfolk State starts important two-game stretch against Coppin State

The Norfolk State women’s basketball team looks to extend its three-game winning streak this weekend. The Spartans will battle Coppin State at Echols Hall on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m., before traveling to Morgan State on Monday, Jan. 13, at 5:30 p.m.

The matchup with CSU marks the third game of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this season and the 49th time that the two schools have met. Norfolk State defeated Coppin State three times last season.

Graduate guard Diamond Johnson scored in double figures in all three meetings, with a combined 62 points across the games. Senior forward Kierra Wheeler also scored double figures in all three meetings, including 22 points and 11 rebounds on Feb. 24, 2024.

Norfolk State enters Saturday’s matchup off a 94-54 victory at Delaware State on Monday, Jan. 6.

Johnson led the Spartans with 28 points, adding eight steals, six assists, and five rebounds against the Hornets. Senior forward Makoye Diawara (16), sophomore guard Da’Brya Clark (10), and Wheeler (10) also scored in double figures for the Spartans in the win.

NSU leads the all-time series against Morgan State 29-19. The Spartans took down the Bears twice last season (79-49 and 61-53). Johnson led Norfolk State in both meetings, scoring 19 points in the first meeting and a career-high 32 points in the next meeting.
