Reboots can be hit or miss, but How to Train Your Dragon gets it just right. A huge part of that is thanks to Nico Parker’s nuanced take on Astrid, the Viking warrior we all wanted to be growing up.
Nico Parker may be Hollywood royalty by birth, but her career is just getting started. This summer, she stars as Astrid in the live-action remake of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon.
Lately, the internet has been buzzing about how “Tom & Zendaya” coded Nico and her co-star Mason Thames are. The meaning? As we know, Tom and Zendaya first met on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming and went on to film Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The pair consistently gush about how they connected immediately during the chemistry read, eventually falling in love while making the films.
In our interview, Nico shares what it was really like working with Mason. Just like Tom and Zendaya, she recalls the scene they auditioned with for the chemistry read, where she felt they both instantly knew they would get the part.
Nico also touches on her approach to portraying Astrid, her killer fight scenes, and the grit it took to make wielding those massive shields look effortless, even though they were insanely heavy.
With a legacy franchise like How to Train Your Dragon, there’s a lot riding on getting it right. But between the nostalgic magic, stellar effects, and Nico Parker’s performance, it’s safe to say: Gen Z just got their new dragon queen.
How to Train Your Dragon is in theaters now.
