Netflix’s Carry-On Trailer Drops: Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman Lead Christmas Thriller

This holiday season, Netflix is offering a festive yet intense thrill ride with Carry-On, the latest project from director Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows). The official trailer for this Christmas-themed thriller has just dropped, teasing a high-stakes battle of wits set within the claustrophobic confines of an airport on Christmas Eve.

Carry-On stars Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton, along with a slew of interesting characters caught up in the tense, life-or-death situation. The film will hit Netflix globally on Friday, December 13, 2024.

Carry-On tells the story of a young TSA agent, played by Taron Egerton, who is caught up in high pressure when blackmail from a mysterious traveler sets him up to let a deadly package slip onto a Christmas Eve flight and negotiate a cat-and-mouse game that plays out in the days leading up to the flight’s departure.

The airport setting brings a deep sense of claustrophobia and urgency to the story, where characters are trapped in a sort of microcosm in which every decision can bring life-or-death consequences. As Christmas Eve draws closer and closer, the stakes grow greater and greater, with the young TSA agent needing all his ingenuity to outsmart his blackmailer before it’s too late.

Besides Egerton and Bateman, Carry-On boasts an extremely rich cast with Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Logan Marshall-Green, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, and Gil Perez-Abraham. Every actor brings a pivotal character to the table in this growing tension as things keep getting from bad to worse.

Jason Bateman is a master of comedic timing from shows like Ozark and films such as Horrible Bosses. Here, in Carry-On, he will probably don a more somber character. He always seems to balance cool-headedness with inner vulnerability. Taron Egerton, fresh from Rocketman and his work in the Secret Service series, brings depth and intensity to the young TSA agent caught in this deadly game.

The remaining key cast includes Danielle Deadwyler, who is on the rise after breaking onto screens in both Till and The Harder They Fall, as well as Logan Marshall-Green, hot off his success in Upgrade and The Invitation. The supporting cast will also include other acclaimed actors like Dean Norris, best known for his role in Breaking Bad, along with Sinqua Walls of Power.

The Carry-On screenplay was written by TJ Fixman, whose résumé is graced with hits like Rango and The Lego Batman Movie. Dylan Clark produced the film, along with executive producers Holly Bario, Brian Williams, Collet-Serra himself, and Scott Greenberg.

Carry-On represents the outcome of a new deal that Netflix entered with Steven Spielberg’s prestigious production company Amblin Partners for the very first time. The latest agreement insinuates fresh and exciting storylines coming to Netflix subscribers, packing in a thrilling sense of suspense with the seasonal tug of Christmas.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra stamps Carry-On with his signature tension and atmosphere. Fresh from work on such film titles as The Shallows and Orphan, this is a director who can merge edge-of-the-seat suspense with character-driven narratives. In Carry-On, the tight confines of an airport create a perfect backdrop for his skillful direction, allowing escalating tension to build up to the climax of the story.

Collet-Serra added in a statement that he couldn’t wait to dive into the holiday thriller. “The Christmas season is typically one of joy and tenderness. Yet, unconsciously, there’s this underlying tension with all the chaos from airports and traveling. Carry-On embodies that dynamic in such an innovative and thrilling manner,” he said.

As the official trailer presents, Carry-On is something more than a classic holiday movie. Although it kept the setting of festivity, there is no doubt that this is mainly a thriller, touching on the universal fear of being confined and out of control, with a ticking clock that begs for fast action. Adding a Christmas Eve flight gives another level of pressure: the stakes are sky-high as the mystery unfolds.

Just about what you would want out of a combination of Christmas spirits and a pulse-pounding thriller where just about anyone from any character could be hiding something, and a wrong move has dire consequences.

Carry-On will be released exclusively on Netflix on December 13, 2024. Below, you can now watch the official trailer and prepare for a holiday adventure unlike any other.
