Michael Vick talks Rooney Rule, NFL coaching aspirations

Michael Vick is fully immersed in his latest challenge — turning around Norfolk State’s football program — but he hasn’t ruled out a future return to the professional sidelines.

In a recent interview on NewsNation Live with Connell McShane, Vick opened up about his ambitions as a coach and shared his thoughts on the NFL’s Rooney Rule, a policy created to promote diversity in coaching and executive positions across the league.

“It’s all about putting the right people in place — the most credible people,” Vick said during the segment. “It’s not about seeing color, but about appreciating what people bring to the table. That’s what it all boils down to.”

Vick, who finished his first season at Norfolk State with a 1–11 record, acknowledged that improving the program remains his primary focus. “I’ve been really locked in on coaching,” he said. “We’re trying to be the best team we can be. We feel like we should have had more wins, so it’s all about having the most credible candidates and building the right culture.”

Michael Vick open to NFL shot — one day

Though his attention is currently on Norfolk State, Vick admitted that his long-term goal is to eventually coach in the NFL. “Absolutely,” he said. “I’m going to work as hard as I can, study as much as I can, and help my team and players succeed. I’d love to coach at the highest level when the time is right and I’ve gained the experience needed to build a winning organization.”

Vick’s comments offer a glimpse into both his evolving coaching philosophy and his continued growth beyond his playing career — one driven by preparation, credibility, and a clear vision for the future.
