Michael Jackson’s former publicist, Raymone Bain, says Beyoncé was part of a small group of celebrities who had Michael’s back when many in the entertainment industry kept their distance.
Bain talked about how tough it was for the late king of pop under all the scrutiny, saying that the lack of support from his peers really got to Michael.
“There were only a few who supported and who even called to say, ‘We are with you, and we are supporting you.’ That was very hurtful to him,” Bain said. “And I can count them on one hand, truly.”
Bain went on to say that Michael’s World Music Awards moment was particularly rough, saying how the organization was having trouble finding celebrities to present the awards to Michael.
“When he was honored by the World Music Awards, it was very difficult to find people who would come and give him his award,” Bain said. “The organizers and owners of the World Music Award were calling so many people to give Michael Jackson his award, and they wouldn’t do it. They didn’t want to be on the same stage.”
Bain says Beyoncé agreed to present the award, which really made an impression on Michael, and also says Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, was also on board.
“That’s why I love Beyoncé now, because she defied everybody,” Bain said. “And she and her mom, Tina, they were like, ‘Beyoncé is going to do this.’ And I will never forget it. Michael never forgot it.”
Bain says the moment really stuck with her because, in her mind, Beyoncé went ahead and did her thing even when everyone else doubted her.
“You know, we can all follow the leader,” Bain said. “But she stepped up when others in her camp said, ‘Oh no, you don’t wanna do this.’”
