Megan Thee Stallion, the Houston-born rapper who has dominated the airwaves, is transitioning from the mic to center stage for documentary filmmaking. Her first-ever documentary, In Her Words, premieres on Prime Video on October 31 to align with her annual Hottieween celebration. The rapper went to Instagram and shared her excitement, saying: “I’m nervous and excited for y’all to see it but it’s finally here.”.
Helmed by Nneka Onuorah-an, an independent filmmaker who has also worked on Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls and The Legend of the Underground should be a deep dive into Megan’s rise to national stardom. Clocking in at nearly two hours, In Her Words is expectedly multi-dimensional in delving into the world of Megan Pete-raw, emotional, and out of character from the musical persona known to the world as Megan Thee Stallion.
The film chronicles Megan’s rise in hip-hop-from success to trials she has faced. According to the official synopsis, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words is a film that provides “unprecedented access to the multi-faceted woman behind the persona.” It follows Megan from being a native of Houston with big dreams to that of a global superstar; at the same time, it highlights her struggles with grief, fame, and success.
Megan’s career exploded in the late 2010s, but 2019 was the year that cemented her as a force to be reckoned with. Her breakout single “Big Ole Freak,” from the Tina Snow EP, set the stage for her subsequent mixtape Fever, which became a sensation thanks to the viral “Hot Girl Summer” trend. In that year, however, Megan experienced a personal tragedy when her mother, Holly-Wood, of Houston, also a rapper, died of brain cancer. Her great-grandmother would die two weeks later.
Megan continued working on her career while continuing her education. She graduated with a winner’s grit and determination, earning a bachelor’s degree in health administration from Texas Southern University in December 2021. At the height of the pandemic-2020-she, she has had presented “Savage,” which received a Grammy Award-winning remix courtesy of Beyoncé. Equally potent that year was her collaboration with Cardi B on the sultry, provocative track “WAP,” which sealed her place in hip-hop history.
But midway through her career, Megan experienced another traumatic event when she was shot in July 2020 by fellow recording artist Tory Lanez. The highly publicized trial finally concluded in August 2023, with Lanez sentenced to 10 years in prison. Throughout it all, Megan remained resolute despite public condemnation and vilification by some in and outside the industry.
As the documentary treads deeper into moments that have most exposed Megan Pete, In Her Words becomes the opportunity for fans to meet her. The film is co-produced by Carmen Cee and Mackenzie Hill with executive producers like Loren Hammonds, Dave O’Connor, Lori York, Desiree Perez, Alexa Conway, Ian Orefice, and Onuorah herself.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios in association with TIME Studios, Roc Nation, and Nneka Productions, the documentary will be an uncensored and intimate rendering of one of today’s most enthralling women in music.
At 112 minutes in, In Her Words premieres on Prime Video on October 31st, just in time for Halloween and Megan’s fan-favorite Hottieween celebration. Fans are already taking to the socials, hyped to witness the rapper getting more candid than ever.
