Tony Award-winning actress Laura Benanti found herself humbled aboard a recent flight after a plane full of teenage theater students failed to recognize her, she revealed in a TikTok video.
Benanti estimated that the majority of her fellow passengers were members of a youth theater group, and not one of them knew who she was.
@laurabenanti I guess they weren’t alive to watch The Tonys in 2008.
“So I would say about 83% of the people on this airplane are teenagers in a theater group,” Benanti said in the video. “And not a single one of them recognizes me. And I could not tolerate that, obviously.”
Refusing to let the slight stand, Benanti took it upon herself to make an introduction.
“So I said, are you guys part of a theater group? And they said, yes. And then I said, I do theater,” she recounted.
Her bid for recognition was met with indifference. A young man wearing a beret and a jacket draped over his shoulders responded with a simple “Cool,” a reply Benanti met with defeat.
“R I P,” she said.
