Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are investigating a mystery of interstellar proportions in the first teaser trailer for HBO’s Lanterns.
The trailer below stars with John Stewart (Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Chandler) talking about whether John is ready for the full responsibilities of the ring. Then, as we saw in the HBO footage from its 2026 preview trailer, Hal jumps out of the car, leaving a shocked John to drive.
What’s in the new ‘Lanterns’ trailer?
The trailer continues with the two in a small town, taking on a crime that looks small, but must clearly be an intergalactic threat since the Green Lanterns are present. Overall, the refreshing thing about the trailer is how terrestrial the drama remains. We see hints of mysterious damage, but the most important scenes include Hal and John’s personal power struggles over the old and new ways of doing things. If you were waiting to see some aliens, you’ll have to keep waiting.
Other actors who appear in the series include Nicole Ari Parker, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Kelly Macdonald also stars.
Lanterns follows, according to HBO, “two intergalactic cops,” one new to the force and one who’s a legend among the force, who are “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
The Lanterns pilot is co-written by co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Mundy serves as showrunner. James Hawes directs the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov directing this season.
Executive producers include Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.
When does ‘Lanterns’ premiere on HBO?
While the exact premiere date is unknown, Lanterns is set to debut on HBO and HBO Max this August. Watch the trailer below:
