Kamala Harris to spend election night at HBCU alma mater

As most of the country will be watching from home Election Day results roll in, Vice President Kamala Harris will do the same — from a special home base.

The presidential candidate will spend election night at Howard University, her alma mater, on Tuesday night.

“This is a momentous occasion, as it will be the first time in modern history that a presidential election night event will be hosted on a college or university campus,” Howard University President Ben Vinson III said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of our alumna, Kamala Harris, who has already made history as the first woman of color and HBCU graduate to serve as our nation’s vice president.”

Harris graduated from Howard in 1986 with a degree in political science and economics and was a member of  Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

“That was the beauty of Howard. Every signal told students that we could be anything — that we were young, gifted, and black, and we shouldn’t let anything get in the way of our success, Harris wrote in her memoir, The Truths We Hold.

“The campus was a place where you didn’t have to be confined to the box of another person’s choosing. At Howard, you could come as you were and leave as the person you aspired to be.”
