JT shared she is mourning her brother after he recently passed away. The rapper, whose birth name is Jatavia Shakara Johnson, took to social media to share the news.
She posted a childhood photograph of her and JR. The siblings are seen smiling while her brother is sitting in a chair and she stands next to him.
“I pray you’re somewhere so safe & comfortable,” she tweeted last Thursday.

The rapper did not share her brother’s cause of death or the date of his passing. Last summer, JT opened up about her family in a cover story for PAPER magazine.
“I was in a [rap] group when I was a little girl, called The Protegees, with my sisters and brothers,” she said. “I used to write my raps down. I was such a little girl that I don’t even remember much about it, but I know that I was writing my own music, and I was writing my sisters’ and brothers’ too.”
JT is the eldest of her mother’s three children. She is also the youngest of her father’s 16 children, who he shared with JT’s stepmother. When she was five years old, she went to live with her father after her mother was incarcerated.
“I always felt like I was the black sheep in my family,” she told Angie Martinez in a 2023 interview, according to PAPER.
