Jacobian Morgan was named top offensive player in SWAC. Will he be named JSU QB1?

Making his first start since the season opener, Jackson State quarterback Jacobian Morgan was the best player on the field for the Tigers against Texas Southern.

Morgan accounted for nearly 300 yards of offense and four touchdowns in a 43-14 win by JSU in the SWAC opener last Saturday night.

On Monday, the Syracuse transfer was named co-SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

But did the impressive outing do enough for Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor to name him the starter after weeks of deploying both Morgan and Cam’Ron McCoy in a two-quarterback system?

Taylor had been intrigued by the idea of using both quarterbacks in games because opposing defenses would find it difficult to prepare for each.

Later on Monday, Taylor indicated that Morgan would start for the Tigers this week against Alabama A&M in the Gulf Coast Classic.

“We’re gonna send him back out there this week,” Taylor said Monday. “Going into this game, I thought he answered a lot of questions for us. Stepped up as a leader. He was generating explosive plays, and the guys around him were starting to believe in him as well. So we’re going to continue with Jacobian.”

In five games this season, Morgan has thrown for 855 passing yards, rushed for 111 yards, and scored 10 touchdowns.

“He stepped up and played well,” Taylor said. “We saw that he had a good week of practice, though. He was doing some good stuff out there. The thing we were concerned about was him having chemistry with a bunch of new guys out there. Some guys had to step up with some receivers down and injury, and he did that.
