Ivana Baquero, Tristán Ulloa, and Carmen Machi Lead Netflix’s True Crime Drama A Widow’s Game

Netflix

Netflix has revealed the first images of its upcoming film A Widow’s Game, inspired by the infamous “Black Widow of Patraix” case that captivated and shocked Spain in 2017. The film, produced by Bambú Producciones (The Asunta Case, The Alcasser Murders), stars Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth) as María Jesús Moreno Cantó, better known as Maje, and Tristán Ulloa (Fariña) as Salva. The cast is rounded out by Carmen Machi (Truman), with Carlos Sedes directing.

The film, currently shooting in Valencia, revisits the events of August 2017 when a man was discovered in a Valencia parking lot, and brutally stabbed seven times. Initially perceived as a crime of passion, the investigation took a shocking turn when it pointed to the victim’s young widow, Maje. Despite her outwardly sweet and serene demeanor, evidence revealed a manipulative side that led to her involvement in the murder.

A Psychological Dive into a Dark Tale

Executive producer Ramón Campos explained the thematic depth of the project:
“Why does a person consider it better to commit murder than to get divorced? That question haunted me when I first heard about Maje and Salvador’s crime. Over the years, we’ve sought to unravel this mystery, delving into how Maje manipulated Salvador into committing an unspeakable act. This film is not about the victim. It’s about the murderers—because sometimes the answers to our actions lie not in who we are, but in where we come from.”

A Collaboration of True Crime Experts

Bambú Producciones has become a trusted name in Spanish true crime adaptations, and A Widow’s Game promises to continue that legacy. The production brings together a seasoned team familiar with dramatizing real-life mysteries, ensuring that the story remains gripping while exploring the psychological and emotional complexities of the case.

Fans of true crime and psychological thrillers can look forward to this chilling exploration of deception, manipulation, and murder when the film premieres on Netflix in 2024.
