The defending MEAC softball champions are in first place once again.
Howard swept previously unbeaten South Carolina State over the weekend by a 28-8 count in three games.
The Bison, now 8-1 in MEAC play, jumped ahead of South Carolina State (6-3) and Norfolk State (7-2) to claim first place going into the season’s final month.
Junior catcher Makiya Taylor was the offensive star of Saturday’s doubleheader, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a two-run home run in a 6-0 Howard win in Game 1.

Reigning MEAC player of the year Taylor Ames-Alexander also drove in a run against her former team and stole home.
Sophomore pitcher Aiko Conway hurled a gem for Howard, going the complete seven innings and allowing just three hits and striking out six Bulldogs.
The day’s second game was more of the same from the Bison offense as Howard worked out 11 walks and scored 14 runs on just eight hits. Senior leftfielder Maryn Jordan had no official at bats but walked four times and scored two runs.
Southern transfer Taylor homered again, this time a three-run shot that triggered the run rule, ending the game in five innings with Howard taking a 14-5 decision.
Sunday’s series finale was an 8-3 Howard triumph, led by two hits and three RBI from freshman second baseman Janis Sutton.
