HBCU women’s soccer team wins first match in nearly three years

After going winless each of the last two full seasons, one HBCU women’s soccer team is starting 2025 on a good note.

Thanks to a goal by junior forward Nicole Cargill, the Delaware State women snapped a 35-match winless streak with a 1-0 win over Alabama A&M in their season opener Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets were 0-32-3 going back to their last win, a 4-2 decision at South Carolina State on October 23, 2022. Their last home win prior to Sunday was also against South Carolina State, 3-0 on Oct. 9, 2022.

Cargill’s winner came in the 72nd minute off an assist from senior forward Frederika Kibassa Maliba Ntumbia. Freshman goalkeeper Johoanna Horynak kept the Bulldogs off the board, stopping all seven shots on goal that came her way.

The win was the first for DSU head coach Natasha Ademakinwa, beginning her second season on the job.
