As the cost of doing business in college athletics grows, one HBCU has been forced to make a difficult decision about an athletic program.
Prairie View A&M announced Monday afternoon that the university will cut men’s and women’s tennis immediately as a part of “a broader strategic realignment within the athletic department.
This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the university’s athletic portfolio and is rooted in a commitment to long-term operational excellence, fiscal sustainability, and student-centered planning.”
PVAMU said that “The evolving landscape of collegiate athletics—including rising costs, facility demands, and the need for programmatic focus—necessitated tough decisions. This step allows the university to prioritize investment in core programs that serve the largest number of student-athletes and align with PVAMU’s long-term strategic goals.”
The university said tennis scholarships would be honored if tennis athletes chose to stay on campus. If they choose to enter the portal, PVAMU pledged their complete support with documentation, advisement and counseling.
