There are just about three weeks of regular season games left in HBCU Division I hoops.
While a few teams are making their cases for regular season championships, others are positioning themselves for the best seed possible in the conference tournaments, which decide who will represent their league in the NCAA tournament.
Here’s a recap of some of this past week’s most important matchups.
Yesterday’s price is not today’s price in Tallahassee
The more Florida A&M’s men’s basketball team wins, the higher the price will be to keep head coach Patrick Crarey II.
The Rattlers held off Jackson State 76-71 Saturday afternoon to establish a five-way tie for second place in the SWAC with an 8-4 conference record (11-12 overall). Rattler guard Sterling Young led the charge with 28 points off the bench, including a 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line.

Not bad for a coach who only received a one-year contract prior to the start of the season.
North Carolina A&T women continue to lead Coastal Athletic Association
The Aggie women won their only game this week, a 73-55 win at last-place Northeastern Friday. Junior center Chaniya Clark led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Thanks to the win, A&T (14-9 overall, 10-2 in conference) continues to hold first place in the CAA by one game over Drexel and two games each over Charleston and Campbell.
North Carolina A&T will visit William & Mary on Friday and then host an improving University of Delaware team on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware State men buzzing around the MEAC’s top half
The Delaware State men’s basketball winning streak is now at five games following a 90-69 win over defending MEAC champ Howard at home Saturday afternoon.
DSU forced 18 turnovers and outrebounded Howard 41-31. Grad student guard Martaz Robinson had another stellar performance with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds.
The Hornets are 13-10 overall and 5-3 in MEAC play, tied with Howard and South Carolina State for second place.
DSU visits first-place Norfolk State on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
Tennessee State men moving towards OVC top four seed
Big Blue had a three-game winning streak snapped Saturday by SIU-Edwardsville 84-72, but they now sit at 9-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference, tied for fourth place with Morehead State.
TSU visits UT-Martin on Tuesday and Tennessee Tech on Saturday, both of whom are just one game behind them in the standings. Both games could be critical for Tennessee State’s OVC title hopes.
SWAC women’s top seed is still up for grabs
The SWAC women have their own exciting conference race as three teams – Jackson State, Southern, and Texas Southern – are tied for first place with 11-2 league marks, followed closely by Alabama A&M at 10-3.
JSU held off Florida A&M 40-37 on Saturday, with Taleah Dilworth, Jaileyah Cotton, and Diaka Berete scoring eight points each.
Southern won comfortably over Prairie View A&M 86-42. Every Jaguars player scored, led by senior forward Soniyah Reed’s 19 points and eight boards off the bench.
Texas Southern lost a tough one to Grambling 71-46, while Alabama A&M outscored Mississippi Valley State 95-76. There’s still a lot of basketball left to be played, so while every SWAC team will head to Atlanta for the conference tournament, in what order remains to be seen.
