Former Morehouse men’s basketball coach finds new home in SIAC

The Allen men’s basketball team looked within the SIAC for its next leader.

Longtime Morehouse men’s basketball coach Douglas Whittler is moving to Columbia, South Carolina, to become the Yellow Jackets’ next men’s basketball coach.

A former All-SIAC First Team selection with the Morehouse men’s basketball team, Whittler began coaching as an assistant with the Maroon Tigers in 2009.

He served as an assistant for six seasons before, including a 2013 season in which he helped lead Morehouse to the SIAC championship game.

Whittler was then promoted to associate head coach in 2015 before being named interim head coach in 2021 following the untimely passing of former longtime head coach Grady Brewer.

During this tenure as head coach, Whittler led the Maroon Tigers to a 76-40 overall record, including three consecutive SIAC East division titles.

Whittler fills a role left vacant by Andre Payne, who was hired by Allen in April, only to return to his previous job as women’s basketball coach at Talladega College with the added role of athletic director.

In its second season as an official member of the SIAC this past year, Allen finished with a 6-22 overall record.
