The first SWAC coach to win a Celebration Bowl has a job in the FBS.
Broderick Fobbs, who led Grambling State to the 2016 HBCU national championship, was announced as South Alabama’s new running backs coach.
Fobbs previously coached the running backs at Louisiana Monroe for two seasons after he was fired by Grambling during the 2021 season.
Fobbs, a former Tigers football player himself, coached the program from 2014-2021, compiling a record of 54-32. Grambling won three straight SWAC West titles between 2015 and 2017 and back-to-back SWAC titles in 2016 and 2017.
The Tigers defeated North Carolina Central 10-9 in the second-ever Celebration Bowl, becoming the first SWAC school to win one. Fobbs’ Tigers held the distinction of being the only SWAC school to win until Florida A&M and Jackson State won in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024.
Fobbs was a running back on Grambling’s 1992 Black College national championship team, the last one under the legendary Eddie Robinson’s guidance.
