Former HBCU defensive star Shaq Leonard announces retirement from NFL

Former South Carolina State standout Shaquille “Shaq” Leonard, one of the most decorated linebackers in recent NFL history, announced his retirement.

Leonard, a second-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, burst onto the scene as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Pro. Over his seven-year career, he earned three Pro Bowl nods and was selected to the All-Pro first team three times, solidifying himself as one of the premier defenders of his era.

At SC State, Leonard wreaked havoc in the MEAC and becoming one of the league’s most feared defenders. His collegiate dominance not only propelled him into the NFL but also helped spotlight the pipeline of talent coming from HBCUs.

Leonard’s relentless style, boundless energy, and penchant for game-changing plays made him a fan favorite in Indianapolis. Former teammates and coaches praised his leadership, noting his preparation and intensity were contagious in the locker room.

“Colts Nation will always remember The Maniac’s palpable energy on the field with each tackle, interception, punchout, and fumble recovery,” late Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement following Leonard’s release in 2023. “Off the field, he’s a servant leader and assisted numerous families in both his hometown and the Indianapolis community. We’re thankful for Shaq and the contributions he made to our organization. We wish him and his beautiful family the best moving forward.”

Leonard finishes his career with over 600 tackles, double-digit interceptions, and multiple forced fumbles, earning recognition as one of the most complete linebackers of his generation.
