Fetty Wap is explaining his renewed perspective on life following his incarceration.
In a recent appearance on Tamron Hall, the rapper, whose given name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, opened up about pursuing his education while behind bars, The Grio reported.
The MC revealed that he earned his GED and completed coursework to receive certifications in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. For Fetty Wap, the time away helped him to get realigned with his priorities.
When was Fetty Wap released>?
Fetty Wap was released in January after being sentenced in 2023 as a result of federal drug charges tied to a cocaine distribution conspiracy.
“I got my GED. I took a few HVAC courses. Oh, yeah, I do a few things,” he told Hall. He added that conversations with other inmates influenced his thinking. “You meet a lot of people that … they had legitimate businesses and making a good amount of money. So I’m like, well, he making, like, rapper money. I’ma try that out.”
Fetty also shared that because he doesn’t write his songs down, music was the least of his concerns while incarcerated. Moreover, he told Hall that he didn’t think he would be a hip-hop star coming out of prison.
Fetty Wap isn’t looking to resume life as a hip-hop star just yet
Unlike many musicians who have previously found themselves in trouble with the law, Fetty Wap isn’t ready to jump back into the spotlight immediately.
Instead, he has a renewed outlook on life, to be present for his family and support programs that encourage education for the youth.
“Right now, my focus is on giving back through my community initiatives and foundation, supporting at-risk young children by expanding access to education, early tech skills, and vision care for young kids and students so they can show up as their best selves,” he said in a statement following his release, The Grio reported. “I’m committed to moving forward with purpose and making a meaningful impact where it matters most.”
