History will be made this Saturday when HBCU football comes to Boston for the first time. The Essence HBCU Classic will feature Morehouse College and Johnson C. Smith University in a matchup at Harvard Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
The game is part of a four-day celebration that includes cultural events, a financial empowerment summit, Gospel Fest, and a street renaming honoring New Edition. Organizers say the Classic is designed to highlight not only HBCU athletics but also the broader impact of HBCU culture in a city not typically associated with Black college football.
In this video, HBCU Sports’ Kenn Rashad speaks with Michele Ghee, Chief Content Officer at Essence, and Derrick Brown, co-founder of the Essence HBCU Classic, about how the game came together and what it means for Boston, HBCUs, and Black culture.
